The basic principles of design are Harmony, Proportion, Balance, Rhythm and Emphasis. These are the fundamentals of the Art of Design, and these are the fundamentals that Is.Interiors returns to at the outset of every Design project. These principles are applied to all the aspects of the room that we are dealing with, from the lampshades to the pelments, from the curtains to the cushions, from the upholstery to the tassels. These principles are manifested in the colours, the textures, the shapes and the juxtaposition of the fabrics and patterns in the whole room scheme.

Because I come from a background in fashion design, to me a Mood Board is entirely different than a Sample Board. The title of this Mood Board is 'Urban Manor-House'
The Mood Board is a visual reference which sets up a style for the room or house. Using this reference throughout all the design processes, and shopping trips, really does take the strain out of the decision-making.
This picture on the left is the Sample Board of the soft-furnishings for the main Drawing Room that might suggest, 'Urban Manor-House'. These samples can be used on cushions and table coverings and of course on the window treatments.
The Design Board here is for a pair of curtains made up in the Houndstooth Fabric from the sample board above. One of the Mulberry Borders is used at the Rolled Edge to add definition. They hang from a hand-made dark wood pole with Brass Rings and Brass Brackets hold up the pole.
